It was a good day

5.06.2011

And a long day. Yesterday, that is.

It started off with a fun morning walk with a group of moms and kids from church at 9:00 am.

I was not quite dressed appropriately for the occasion but that's because I was leaving to go grocery shopping straight after.

And what would grocery shopping be without a stop at a consignment store, the Goodwill, Target and Old Navy?

My thrifted scores:
the shoes and first pair of jeans were new with tags too - sweet.
I may have also picked up a cute DKNY wrap sweater at Costco and a navy boyfriend cardigan on clearance at Target. All within my grocery budget of course because I'm thrifty like that.

Blake, my little shopping buddy, was a super-trooper like always. I learned something about him too: he has an IRON BLADDER. I took him to the bathroom 3 times during the day, with no success (unless you count it successful that he had me go from 0 to 10 on the exasperated scale in 60 seconds flat due to his need to touch EVERYTHING in the stall with every body part possible) and yet he stayed dry! Until finally he went at Old Navy at 4:30 pm when I bribed him with a sucker because Mommy's bladder was nowhere near as iron-clad as his and I was about to burst if he didn't get off the darned seat.

I brought Pizza Hut take-out home for dinner and was roped into watching High School Musical 2 with my daughter, which I fell asleep during.

AND THEN, because I'm leaving today for the coast for a women's getaway put on by our church and won't be home until Sunday, Russell surprised me with a lovely little bundle of shopping money for the trip (hello, Seaside outlet mall!) as a Mother's Day gift, making me all sorts of happy because if you haven't noticed, I love me some shopping.

It's going to be a great getaway. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

a little marital insight

5.05.2011

What to do when your husband hasn't re-hung your kitchen cupboard door that fell off two weeks ago and has been moved around your kitchen one million times since because it's ALWAYS.IN.THE.WAY...

a) re-hang it yourself

b) hire someone else to do it

c) hit husband on the head with it

d) nag ask politely on a daily basis if today's going to be the day!

I chose none of the above because:

a) I don't think so. When I decide a job clearly falls under husband's duty, I pretty much refuse to do it, even if I'm fully capable, on principle alone.
b) no moola for that kind of thing right now.
c) I'm not the violent sort.
and
d) oh yeah, I did that one and so far the answer has been a resounding no.

So yesterday I tried what has worked well for me in the past: a little cutsey humor...

Umm... that's supposed to be "reunite me"... didn't notice that little typo when I was scribbling this out!
I left the door on Russ's side of the bed and was fixing my hair in the mirror when he wandered in our room and noticed it. I saw his initial look of frustration at being reminded of the door again, but then he noticed the note attached, leaned in to read it, and smirked!

"Alright, that's kinda funny. And darn it, now I've got to do something with it!" he admitted.

TOUCHDOWN!

My husband has a great sense of humor and I've learned to take advantage of that fact. Is that wrong? Because I have like, a 90% success rate with this tactic and I don't want to mess with a good thing.

Games, mini-golf and breaking world news

5.03.2011

That pretty much sums up our weekend.

Friday and Saturday night we spent the evening at different friend's homes playing games.

It's what we do best. Or I should say it's what we enjoy best, because I can't seem to win a game of Canasta to save my life. I did triumph against my friend Brenda in Settlers of Catan though, which was a sweet victory after she made fun of me for watching the Royal wedding and even sunk as low as referring to me as a "prissy".

Not that I'm denying it.

Sunday afternoon we left the kids with Russ's folks and headed out for a fun afternoon of miniature golf and dinner with my parents, brother, and sister and brother-in-law. Perfect weather, perfect day.

Turns out I'm not so good at mini-golf. I came in last. But who cares? We laughed ourselves silly and and I'm ALL ABOUT THE FUN.

And THE FOOD. Jamin picked The Ram to eat at and our meals were excellent. I already mentioned the dessert yesterday but I also tried their babyback ribs for the first time and oh. my. word.

(That means yuuummm.)

I submit to the jury that he could NOT be any cuter
With Mum and Dad

One thing that is not so fun... realizing that the baby of the family is now in his 30's and suddenly feeling like you're all kinda old. Except Dave of course, who kindly pointed out that he still has a year to go.

Whatever, Dave. Who invited you and your mini-golf super-skills along anyways?!

After picking up our kids and getting them all to bed, I sat down to browse facebook, which somehow led to googling tornado videos (sooooo terrible what happened last week in the mid-west), which led to me stumbling across the breaking news that Osama Bin Laden was dead.

After sending texts to my Dad and brother-in-law to see if they were watching the news (no they weren't in fact, because they had seen it when it actually broke almost an hour earlier) I watched for a while more before wandering through some more news clips online, which ultimately led to me watching 9/11 footage of the world trade center attacks until 1:00 am when my husband came out to the living room and found me in a puddle of tears.

And that was our weekend. Besides the late-night crying I'd say it was Top. Notch.

Monday confessional

5.02.2011

I've never believed in the fortunes you get out of Chinese fortune cookies, although they're always fun to read.

But yesterday at lunch that changed.

I think this one is a direct word from the Lord...

Enjoy dessert?

Well I think I will, thank you!

Delectable caramel covered bread pudding courtesy of The Ram, the restaurant where we celebrated my brother's 30th birthday last night.

I may or may not have eaten nearly all of it by the end of the evening.
